Geology Merit Badge

Discover the depths of geoscience studies. Scouts will investigate rock & mineral properties, while learning to identify them. They will dive deep into geologic time while exercising their creativity and looking at sample fossil specimens. Mineral resources, maps, and career possibilities are also discussed. Each scout will put together a rock collection and a fossil collection to take home. The Geology Merit Badge program is designed to meet all requirements of the badge. This badge program features hands-on Geology workshops conducted by registered Badge Counselors plus 'An Introduction to Speleology' pre-tour program, and a special Dark Zone blacklight/flashlight tour of the caverns.

Mammal Study Merit Badge

Build on teamwork and scouting ideals while participating in this Merit Badge. Bats are the focus of the Mammal Study program, as they are a key “nuts & bolts” species in ecosystems around the world. Discover their importance to the habitats they live in, investigate different bat families, and research local bat species that live in your neighborhood. Complete the Merit Badge by working with your troop to build a bat house to install in your community. The nine hour program features four interactive workshops conducted by registered Badge Counselors plus 'An Introduction to Speleology', pre-tour program, and a Dark Zone blacklight/flashlight interpretive tour of the caverns.

Geocaching Program/Merit Badge Workshops

Engage in a fun outdoor activity that promotes the ideals of Leave No Trace practices. Scouts will learn to operate a handheld GPS unit, set coordinates, and find waypoints. They will use teamwork and games to discuss map-making, geocaching lingo, safety, and rules. Scouts will also get practice using maps and UTM coordinates. A scout-centered geocache hunt awaits at the end of the day. Each scout makes a CITO craft to use in their own geocaching adventures.The Geocaching Merit Badge is a nine hour program featuring four interactive workshops conducted by our experienced staff plus 'An Introduction to Speleology' pre-tour program, and a Dark Zone blacklight/flashlight tour of the caverns.

Scout BSA Merit Badge Camporees

Lincoln Caverns has been serving the Scouting Community for nearly thirty years. By providing activities that are both engaging and educational, Lincoln Caverns offers Scouts BSA an opportunity to learn and make memories that will last them a lifetime. Scout BSA Programs are available year-round in our Indoor Learning Center.

Event dates are ideal for smaller troops. To accommodate more scouts, registration on these event dates is limited to Scouts BSA, leaders, and registered scout parents. Event dates give scouts an opportunity to join others from Pennsylvania and nearby states to complete a scout-centered learning adventure. All programs include a pre-tour program about cave conservation and a cavern tour. Advance registration is required for all event day programs. Registration closes ten days prior to the event, or when the event has booked to capacity.
One Day/One Night options are also available.

  • Friday-Sunday, September 21-23, 2018:  Geology & Geocaching Merit Badge Camporee
  • Saturday-Sunday, October 13-14, 2018: Mammal Study Merit Badge with Ghosts & Goblins Haunted Cave, Trail, & Hayride
  • Friday-Sunday, February 15-17, 2019:  Geocaching & Mammal Study Merit Badge Winter Camporee
  • Friday-Sunday, June 7-9, 2019:  Geology & Mammal Study Merit Badge Camporee

Overnight Options

Bring your sleeping bags and spend the night in heated/air-conditioned comfort upstairs in our learning center. There is room to sleep up to 60 people. Restroom facilities are located in our Visitors' Center wing and refrigeration is available. Coffee maker and TV with VCR on site. Indoor lodging available for one night only: the night prior to or the night during your program.

OR

March thru November:

Enjoy primitive camping in our new group campground atop Warrior Ridge. Private, level sites in wooded areas adjoining a large field for group activities. At each group site porta-johns, fire rings, picnic tables, water for putting out fires, and trash barrels are provided. Drinking water must be carried from the Visitors Center. Firewood and ice is available for a small fee. Easy access from Route 22 via a gravel road. Stay as long as you like: primitive camping nights unlimited.


Overnight programs include special flashlight tours of the caverns!

A two-day option with lodging elsewhere is also available.
